This was a mantra that I have heard for years from the orthodontic community. I do agree with this statement.
However, I would often question the methods required to achieve straight teeth and the amount of metals (including stainless steel which contains nickel) required to move the teeth to the desired positions. It was often not only uncomfortable for the patient but dissimilar metals would cause a galvanic reaction (production of small amounts of electric current), that would unfavorably affect the fillings in the teeth (especially mercury/amalgam). Also, the electrical reactions would have a negative effect on other body parts associated with the teeth.

Crooked teeth are not only an aesthetic consideration in achieving appropriate alignment of a malocclusion, but misaligned teeth are usually associated with traumatic conditions that include decay and recession of the gum tissue around the teeth associated with the malocclusion. Accompanying bone loss is often seen in these conditions.
Because crooked teeth are harder to access with conventional cleaning, decay is often seen and restorations become more complex.
